If your Nokia N97 device is showing messages like "Memory full. Delete or move some data from C: Phone memory" or "Memory low. Delete or move some data from C: Phone memory", you can try to increase the amount of free phone memory (C: Phone memory) as described below.
With phone software version 20.x.019 and later it is possible to free some memory by running the Memory reorganiser application. The application will move some of the data files and applications from C: Phone memory to E: Mass memory. The application is available for downloading via the SW Update application for version 20.x.019 and later. If an older phone software version is in use, the software must be upgraded first. The current software version can be checked by typing in the command *#0000#.
Memory reorganiser can be run in the following way:
When the reorganisation of the memory has been completed, the Memory reorganiser application will remove itself automatically.
If Memory reorganiser is not available via SW Update menu, the memory reorganisation may already have been performed in your device. This can be checked in Menu > Settings > Application mgr. > Installed apps. where the application Reorganiser Uninstaller can be found if the reorganisation has already been completed.
If the Memory reorganiser is not available for your device or it doesn't help, check the following:
The available free phone memory can be viewed in File Manager by selecting Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr. and checking the free memory status of C: Phone memory. The memory usage details can be viewed by selecting C: Phone memory > Options > Details > Memory.
If it is not possible to release enough memory and it's desired to restore the device to the original state, the device can be reset by typing *#7370# in standby mode. Before the device is reset, you need to provide the lock code. The default lock code is 12345. Resetting the device will permanently erase all user data and settings as well as add-on applications and operator specific settings. The mass memory (E:) and memory card (F:) contents will be preserved. It is recommended to take a backup before resetting the device.
AVI (Audio Video Interleave, file extension .avi) video files cannot be played in Nokia N97 or N97 mini device. The files need to be converted first to MP4 or 3GP video file format before they can be played. The conversion can be done for example with Nokia Ovi Suite or PC Suite when transferring the video files to the mobile device.
When using Nokia Ovi Suite, version 2.1 or later is needed for the video transfer. Copy the AVI video file to your Ovi Suite album, right click the video and select Copy to device. For more details, see Nokia Ovi and PC Suite instructions.
Note that the conversion of the video file format doesn't yet guarantee that the video can be properly viewed in your device. The video and audio codecs must also be compatible with the codecs supported by the device (see the product specifications for the supported codecs).
GPS (Global Positioning System) problems, lost GPS signal or poor GPS reception may occur if the GPS antenna gets covered by hand or something else. This can heavily affect the GPS performance.
The GPS antenna is located under the camera module area. Care should be taken to avoid covering the antenna. For example, when holding the device by two hands when the device is folded open, the left hand could easily cover the GPS antenna and cause performance issues.
If using Nokia Maps application, check also that the latest version is installed in the device to be sure that all the GPS performance improvements of the Maps application are included. Nokia Maps updates can be checked and installed by going to Menu > Applications > SW Update.
In your device, you can check the available software updates by selecting Menu > Applications > SW update (or in some devices Menu > Applications > Tools > SW update). With Software update you can check and download the phone software and application updates over the network connection.
To download and install an update, select Options > Start update.
When the Nokia N97 or N97 mini device is locked, the phone call can be answered by swiping the Answer arrow on the touch screen in the direction of the arrow.
For more call options, the device can be unlocked by swiping the Unlock arrow or by using the lock switch.
The default ringing tone is played instead of the user-defined ringing tone if the system resources are low and there's not enough resources to play the user-defined tone. The device will revert to the default tone if it takes too long time to start playing the user defined tone. The issue may occur e.g. when there's a large number of applications concurrently active or if there's some other constraints preventing the music tone to be played within the allocated time.
The issue is usually temporary and the following actions will help to ensure that the device can properly play the user defined tones:
Improvements for handling of the ringing tone are included in N97 version 22.x.110 and N97 mini version 12.x.110. It is recommended to upgrade to these (or later) software versions if available for your device.
Note that if the ringing tone file is located on memory card, the tone will change to Nokia default tone if the memory card is removed.
A data connection is automatically established when the online mode has been selected in the home screen settings. The home screen widgets can then automatically fetch the latest information from internet and show it on the home screen.
The automatic data connection can be disabled by selecting the offline mode in the home screen settings:
Note that the data connection may be opened automatically also by some other applications, for example by the email clients. The home screen setting doesn't affect the connections opened by these applications.
The backlight of the touch screen switches off when the Light time-out expires. It does, however, not necessarily mean that the device gets locked at the same time. If the Keypad autolock period is longer than the Light time-out value, the device will stay in the unlocked state for a while after the backlight has switched off. During this period, if you slide the lock switch, you actually lock the device and the backlight does not turn on. You need to slide the lock switch a second time to get the backlight on.
Check the following settings:
The Keypad autolock period value should be shorter than the Light time-out value to avoid sliding the lock switch twice.
Starting from N97 phone software version 20.0.019 there is not any more a need to match the two time-out values above. By selecting Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Auto. keyguard > Keypad autolock period = Auto.keyguard, the keypad autolock time-out will automatically be the same as the light time-out and the issue with backlight and keypad autolock should not occur any more.
If updating the Nokia N97 phone software from version 1x.x.x to version 21.x.045 by using Menu > Applications > SW Update > Options > Start update command, the list of available software updates is cleared and it will take 24 hours before the list is refreshed. During this time, the SW Update list may show only the update package "N97 2.1 software installer 1.0" which has already been installed.
To check the latest software updates for your device (for example the latest Maps version), enter Menu > Applications > SW Update again after 24 hours. The list will then be refreshed with the latest software updates.
Note that the availability of software version update 21.x.045 may vary depending on the device variant.
You can format your device by typing *#7370# in standby mode. Before the device is reset, you need to provide the lock code. The default lock code is 12345.
